Former FBI agent Ryan Hardy is called in to help when convicted serial killer Joe Carroll escapes. Having almost lost his life capturing Carroll the first time, Hardy is driven to catch him again quickly. What Ryan realizes however is that capturing Joe may be pointless, if even possible, now that he has a loyal following of sleeper serial killers ready to execute his sociopathic plans.

Kevin Bacon (Ryan), James Purefoy (Joe), Natalie Zea (Claire), Shawn Ashmore (Mike), Valorie Curry (Emma), Nico Tortorella (Jacob), Kyle Catlett (Joey), Annie Parisse (Parker).

The Following, Season 1 begins with some history, character development, plot setup, and looks a lot like a typical crime drama with a detailed plot. As the story evolves and the difficulty of catching Joe is paired with his followers being revealed the series takes an interesting twist combining serial killers with cult terrorists for a surprisingly well detailed storyline with plenty of interesting deviations.

Acting was well done in this series with Bacon delivering a fairly realistic performance. Purefoy does extremely well as a sociopath, conveying the psychotic and charming aspects of his character well. Zea did nicely supporting while Curry took a supporting role and made it stronger than expected. Ashmore was another enjoyable addition with good emotion and delivery. The remainder of the supporting cast did quite nicely.

Camera work, sets, and backgrounds were nicely done and the series appears to have a decent budget. Physical effects were good without unrealistic drama for the most part. Dialogue was good throughout the series and added much depth. Sound and soundtrack were both good.

Overall The Following is an interesting twist on the usual serial killer theme with the unification of other serial killers through Joe's twisted and intentional plot. Those who enjoy a good crime drama or have a serial killer fascination will enjoy this the most.

With plenty of violence, gore, some foul language and depictive sexuality save this for older teens and above.
