Movie review: The Dark Knight Rises

Billionaire Bruce Wayne is still sulking around with his tail between his legs licking his wounds. Struggling over his alter identity as Batman, Bruce decides it is once again time to defend Gotham when new foes Catwoman and Bane appear.

Christian Bale (Batman/Bruce), Gary Oldman (Gordon), Tom Hardy (Bane), Joseph Gordon-Levitt (Blake), Anne Hathaway (Selina), Marion Cotillard (Miranda), Morgan Freeman (Fox), Michael Caine (Alfred), Matthew Modine (Foley).

There is a bit of setup in this one before Batman decides to come out of hiding and things get more interesting. Apparently the film is so long because they took a typical Batman flick and added an amount of drama equivalent to the action. The result is a film that, although nicely done, is a bit different than others from the franchise. In general, the film feels much more low-key. Even during the action scenes. But with a few twists, and some nice new toys, the film pulls off remaining entertaining.

Acting was decent with Bale doing a fairly good job as Batman. Oldman delivers as usual, as does Freeman. Hardy was an interesting Bane, though his accent was difficult at times. Hathaway made a surprisingly good Catwoman, though she feels too fragile for the role at times. The remainder of the cast was solid.

Camera work, sets, and backgrounds as with all the movies in the franchise so far, were nicely done with a solid, crisp feel. Effects, both CGI and physical, were again well done with nice attention to detail. Dialogue was good even if it dragged on at times. Sound and soundtrack were both good and supported the film well.

Overall The Dark Knight Rises is a decent addition to the franchise even while being a bit of a departure with added drama. Franchise fans should enjoy this one, though not as much as previous films.

With some intense violence and action, sensuality and foul language, this should be fine for teens and above.

The Dark Knight Rises is no longer showing in any Littleton, Colorado movie theatres.
