Movie review: The Collection

A vicious serial killer is on the loose, killing in volume but taking one victim in the process. After escaping the serial killer a man is forced to return to the dungeon of horrors to help save a woman now his captive. With a group of mercenaries behind him, he leads them into the house of deadly traps.

Josh Stewart (Arkin), Emma Fitzpatrick (Elena), Christopher McDonald (Mr. Peters), Lee Tergesen (Lucello), Tim Griffin (Dre), Andre Royo (Wally), Randall Archer (The Collector), Shannon Kane (Paz), Brandon Molale (Lin).

The Collection doesn't waste much time before giving us some sexy people followed quickly by a gruesome horror scene that sets the tone for the rest of the film. As the plot develops we find there really isn't much to it, but that doesn't matter. This one is about horror pure and simple and in that respect it does well. Reminiscent of the Saw franchise, The Collector is very good at scaring the hell out of his victims and building traps. And he does both constantly throughout the film.

Acting was decent for the most part. Stewart, though his character wasn't explained well, did a nice job for his part. Fitzpatrick also did well though her shirt half off throughout the film was a large part of her contribution. McDonald played a bit part in this one and could have been used for more. The remainder of the supporting cast did fairly well, including Archer who was appropriately creepy.

Camera work, sets, and backgrounds were fairly well done with a solid feel and good attention to detail. Effects were largely physical and felt quite realistic. CGI was minimal but good and supported the film well. Dialogue was used only as needed to keep things moving and felt somewhat bland. Sound and soundtrack were both good.

Overall The Collection is a well done horror flick with plenty of scares, blood, and gore. Horror fans will likely enjoy this one despite the somewhat thin plot. Those who like plenty of gore will enjoy this the most.

With some sexuality, foul language, blood, gore, violence, gore, and did I mention…gore, save this one for older teens and above.
