Movie review: The Avengers (2012)

The world is threatened and who else but an all-star cast of superheroes led by S.H.I.E.L.D to save us all? With Iron Man, Captain America, the Incredible Hulk, and others the Earth will be saved from certain annihilation.

Robert Downey Jr. (Stark/Iron Man), Chris Evans (Rogers/Capt. America), Mark Ruffalo (Banner/Hulk), Chris Hensworth (Thor), Scarlett Johansson (Romanoff/Black Widow), Jeremy Renner (Barton/Hawkeye), Tom Hiddleston (Loki), Samuel L. Jackson (Fury).

Loki is back and this time threatening the end of humanity with an army of alien soldiers. Bringing his demi-god powers to bear on mankind, Thor isn't far behind to try and save the Earth. With the inexhaustible power of the Tesseract as the key to destruction, S.H.I.E.L.D calls on The Avengers to step up and save mankind.

Acting was good here with the main cast putting forth a good performance. Downey is at his best when some humor is thrown in, which was done well here. Ruffalo did nicely in his part, as did Evans, Hensworth, Renner, and Jackson. Johansson was fun and added well, and Hiddleston makes a wonderful Loki.

Camera work, sets, and backgrounds were all augmented heavily with CGI which was nicely done throughout. Alien effects were made on a big scale but fit the film well with bigger than life presentation. Though the film had a solid human element, it heavily relied on CGI and wouldn't have been possible without it. Dialogue was good with solid drama, humor, and propelled the storyline nicely. Sound and soundtrack were good and the film obviously had a nice budget.

Overall The Avengers is a comic book dream brought to life and is done fairly well. Fans of the superheroes will likely enjoy this one quite a bit while younger audiences may not completely understand them well.

With plenty of sci-fi violence and action this should be fine for preens and above.

The Avengers is no longer showing in any Littleton Colorado movie theatres.
