Movie review: 'Ragamuffin' (the true story of Christian music star Rich Mullins)

May 2, 2014 “Ragamuffin,” will be touring colleges across the United States. Ragamuffin is the true story of one of the greatest performers and songwriters in Christian music, the late great Rich Mullins. We will review this movie here, without giving you any spoilers (we would hate to ruin this one for you.)

I don’t usually do movie reviews here, but since this movie is directly related to Christian music, I thought it would be appropriate. Ragamuffin will be available on DVD exclusively at Walmart on May 6, 2014, but we recommend you watch this movie if you get a chance to be a part of the college tour and buy the DVD.

First off, I have to comment on how the soundtrack was done for this movie. Each Rich Mullins song was perfectly placed in the film, you often hear people reference “the soundtrack to their life,” well Rich Mullins wrote his own soundtrack to his and this film used each song perfectly to display what each song meant to him on a personal level at specific times in his life. Not only that, I was skeptical that they could find an actor that could actually sound like Rich Mullins, wait for it… Michael Koch did a superb job of doing just that! I would say that Mr. Koch came as close as humanly possible to sounding like Rich Mullins himself.

Ragamuffin is not just another Christian movie… it is the movie that all Christians should see! Perhaps the best Christian film I have ever seen, apart from a few movies about actual Bible events. The reason all Christians should see this film is that it reminds us that we are all human, we all have our struggles and it reminds us how important it is to share those struggles with other believers instead of trying to act like we are “holier than thou.” I like how the true story of Rich Mullins showed us the struggles of one of the greatest Christian songwriters ever, not only that, it reminds us not to judge our brethren. I would say that not only Christians should watch this movie, but non-believers as well just so they know that we aren't supposed to behave like a lot of us do and that we all have our struggles. I’ve always felt a connection to Rich Mullins through his music, mainly because he said things in his songs that other people would not: he kept it real, and I think that this movie did that too! I feel that this film will extend the legacy and ministry of Rich Mullins to future generations, it will touch people deeply and bring new listeners to his songs that touched so many already.

“Ragamuffin” by Color Green Films is a treasure to the Christian community and even more so for Contemporary Christian Music lovers. This movie tells the story of Rich Mullins beautifully and realistically, I give it 5 stars! I would give it more if the ratings scale went higher.
