Movie review: Pain & Gain (2013)

Pain & Gain tells the true story of the Sun Gym Gang. Daniel and Adrian are a couple of fitness fanatics who turn to crime as a means to wealth, leading them to kidnapping, extortion, and murder.

Mark Wahlberg (Daniel), Dwayne Johnson (Paul), Anthony Mackie (Adrian), Tony Shalhoub (Victor), Ed Harris (Ed), Rob Corddry (John), Bar Paly (Sorina), Rebel Wilson (Robin), Ken Jeong (Johnny), Michael Rispoli (Frank).

Pain & Gain is an interesting mix of fitness, action, and crime. The film starts off with a substantial amount of character background behind the three main characters; Daniel, Adrian, and Paul. From there the crew decides to follow a half-baked get rich quick scheme and things take some pretty strange turns. As the action heats up the film achieves a fast pace and finally leaves much of the fitness focus behind.

Acting was decent with Wahlberg bringing some interesting energy to his role, for which he also bulked up nicely. Johnson was actually enjoyable in his role and pulled off the somewhat slow Christian focused character well. Mackie was decent but felt a bit disconnected in a few scenes. Wilson was hysterical and the remainder of the supporting cast did well.

Camera work, sets, and backgrounds were good if somewhat simple much of the time. Physical effects were nicely done throughout. Dialogue was a bit corny at times but really didn't present as much comedy as expected. Sound and soundtrack were both good.

Overall Pain & Gain is a somewhat interesting action comedy that is heavy on the action, light on the comedy. Being that the film is based on a true story, those familiar with the story in real life will likely enjoy this one the most.

With bloody violence, nudity, foul language, crude sexual content, and drug use save this one for older teens and above.
