Natalie is a young, attractive lesbian living in New York City who works as a dominatrix to pay the bills while pursuing a career in filmmaking. Things become more complicated when she stumbles across romance, and downright complicated when she discovers a way to make her dream come true and produce a film.
Nicole LaLiberte (Natalie), Ty Jones (Noah), Dawn Noel (Jasmine), Naama Kates (Melanie), Maine Anders (Sonia), Heath Kelts (Jim), Jacqueline Hendy (Veronica), Will Pentecost (Ashtray).
My Normal starts off with a shocking look at Natalie's job in the BDSM industry before introducing us to the lesbian side of her life. From there the storyline gets a bit more complicated but still isn't enough to draw attention from the sexuality. As exciting as the sex may be, the film isn't, and plugs along at a somewhat lethargic pace through the ending which doesn't quite end with a bang.
Acting was a bit rough in this one. LaLiberte felt a bit plastic at first but warmed up after a bit and did an okay job. Jones was decent. Noel was interesting but felt a bit overdrawn. The remainder of the supporting cast felt a bit unpracticed and lacking spark.
Camera work was pretty good considering the film looked somewhat low budget. Sets and backgrounds appeared to be realistic and again, somewhat low budget. Dialogue was stilted and lacked emotion much of the time. Sound was a bit fuzzy and not well done, and the soundtrack was non-existent.
Overall My Normal feels much more like a beginner fetish film that missed the mark, than a lesbian drama with the extreme lifestyles. Those who enjoy eclectic, indie type films will likely enjoy this the most while those who appreciate solid production values will be disappointed.
With plenty of alternative sexuality, nudity, some BDSM scenes, and foul language save this one for adults only.
My Normal is no longer showing in any Littleton Colorado movie theatres.
