When I was in 6th grade, our music teacher taught our class "Do You Hear the People Sing?" from "Les Miserables." It's amazing that all these years later, I still remember the lyrics after finally watching it for the first time. I've never seen the play (on my to-do list) so I can't compare the movie, but I thought the movie version was fantastic.
Who knew that you could literally sing every line of a movie? But in "Les Miserables" it was done and for the most part, done well. There were a few moments where I felt it was unnecessary, but in true musical format, it was over-the-top and theatrical not to mention moving.
I can't say that it is much of a spoiler alert to say nearly everyone dies. I mean the title alone should be a giveaway, but there is still something moving and just grand about it all. The music is remarkable, the acting was fun. (Is Helena Bonham Carter ever not weird?) And my favorite songs were sung to perfection.
The movie is lengthy; it's a fully story with a climax and stunning ending. And this time when mouthing the words to "Do You Hear the People Sing?" just as I did in grade school, it gave me chills.
