Movie review: Killers

Spencer is a suave and practiced assassin for a secret agency and does very well at his job. But when he meets Jen and falls in love he gives everything up for a normal life. Or so he thought. When killers start coming out of the woodwork he finds someone from his past has put a very high dollar contract on his life forcing him and Jen to go on the run to survive.

Ashton Kutcher (Spencer), Katherine Heigl (Jen), Tom Selleck (Mr. Kornfeldt), Catherine O'Hara (Mrs. Kornfeldt), Katheryn Winnick (Vivian), Kevin Sussman (Mac), Lisa Ann Walter (Olivia), Casey Wilson (Kristen), Rob Riggle (Henry), Martin Mull (Holbrook).

Killers starts off looking like a poorly done James Bond film with Kutcher being hard to believe in an assassin role. Once the brief character development is done and the plot starts to unfold though the film takes on a different tone. With some good humor and action thrown into the mix the movie becomes much more entertaining. Twists at the end are easy to spot well in advance so there are no surprises but they are still fun and help hold audience interest.

Acting was decent with Kutcher putting forth a less dorky than usual performance. Heigl was a good choice to play opposite Kutcher and the two seemed to have nice chemistry. Selleck and O'Hara were awesome in their roles and delivered the humor perfectly. Winnick, Wilson, Riggle, Mull and the rest of the supporting cast did well.

Camera work, sets, and backgrounds were all nicely done with some very nice location shots. Effects and action were of surprisingly good quality. Dialogue and sound were okay with some good humor in addition to the campy and dramatic lines.
Overall this is an enjoyable action comedy that doesn't take itself very seriously nor does it require the audience to either. Not a bad choice for family movie night with teens or if you want something mindless.

As of 9.17.10 Killers is no longer showing at any Denver area theatre.

With plenty of violence, some foul language, and sex save this for teens and above.
