Movie review: Humans vs. Zombies

Somehow a deadly virus has gotten loose and is spreading through human contact, triggering an epidemic that results in a horde of ravenous zombies. A group of students and faculty realize something is seriously wrong and, using their video gaming skills, search for a safe place to survive.

Dora Burge (Tommi), Frederic Doss (Frank), Melissa Carnell (Amanda), Chip Joslin (Brad), Jonah Priour (Danny), Jesse Ferraro (James), Rheagan Wallace (Cindy), Christine Bently (Megan), Cody Callahan (Chris).

Humans vs. Zombies starts off with the release of the zombie virus from an apparent government research laboratory. From there the viewpoint switches to that of the school students who, despite being avid gamers familiar with the zombie apocalypse theory, take a while to comprehend it is actually happening. When they do, their gaming skill are put to a true test as they kill as many zombies as possible.

Acting was a mess in the beginning but smoothed out a bit as the film progressed. Joslin was one bright spot, bringing a good dose of badly needed humor to the film. Burge was entertaining but the obnoxious attitude and sarcasm started to fall apart when the zombies started eating people. The remainder of the supporting cast felt inexperienced and emotionally flat.

Camera work, sets, and backgrounds were pretty bland and didn't really bring anything new to the screen. CGI effects were a bit weak. Costuming and zombie effects however were very nicely done. The red eyed zombies were nicely creepy, and gore shots were quite effective. Dialogue was mediocre, as was sound and soundtrack.

Overall Humans vs. Zombies is a mid-level entry in the zombie genre, providing mid-level entertainment. Those who enjoy a well done zombie flick may be disappointed while those new to the genre may enjoy it.

With some mild nudity, foul language, blood, gore, and violence save this for older teens and above.

Humans vs. Zombies is no longer showing in any Littleton Colorado movie theatres.
