Movie review: Europa Report

A private space-exploration company sends six astronauts to Europa, a Jupiter moon, to determine if it can sustain human life. One of the first deep space missions, the astronauts find that life in a terrifying form may already exist on Europa.

Christian Camargo (Daniel), Embeth Davidtz (Samantha), Anamaria Marinca (Rosa), Michael Nyqvist (Andrei), Daniel Wu (William), Karolina Wydra (Katya), Sharlto Copley (James), Dan Fogler (Sokolov), Isiah Whitlock Jr. (Tarik).

Presented in the theme of found video footage, Europa Report is a fairly slow-paced drama that does some good character development on which the remainder of the film is based. The sci-fi aspect, other than space travel and living, is somewhat light leaving a lot to the imagination. In the end the film leaves some unanswered questions and feels like a lot of effort was put into setting up for a sequel.

Acting was decent with the six main characters doing a nice job. Each delivered a solid performance and the cast appeared to work well together.

Camera work was good although the found footage theme got a bit old after a while with split screens and static used to try and create drama. Sets and backgrounds were good with a very realistic feel. Effects were nicely done from most every aspect except for creature effects which felt like nothing more than a flashlight behind transparent fake ice. Final presentation of the creature was actually very disappointing. Dialogue was decent, as was sound and soundtrack.

Overall Europa Report is a mild entry in the Alien Sci-Fi genre that is light on both the alien and thriller aspect. Suspense was stronger but never matured due to the somewhat mild ending to the film.

With sci-fi action, this should be fine for teens and above.
