“To build a better world, sometimes means tearing down the old one.”– Robert Redford as Sect. Pierce
What’s good: These stunts are some of the best you will ever see!
What’s not good: The banter between Rogers and Romanoff seemed forced.
What happened: The highly anticipated ‘Captain America: The First Avenger’ (read my review here) had so much promise, yet delivered such disappointing results. Not only was the film boring, but the villain was one of the worst of all time. The newly released sequel, ‘Captain America: The Winter Soldier’ vastly improves on the original by offering spectacular stunts and a much better enemy.
Captain Steve Rogers (Chris Evans) spends his days exercising and preparing for his next mission. A meeting with someone from his past reminds him just how out of place he is in the world. Meanwhile, fellow soldier Sam Wilson (Anthony Mackie) offers a way to help him through these tough times. He’s actually a ‘pilot’ of a rather unique aircraft. Steve later finds himself working with the beautiful but deadly Natasha Romanoff (Scarlett Johansson). While he frees hostages, she secretly works her own plan. Little do they know that a new menace threatens the existence of their future.
The Winter Soldier (Sebastian Stan) proves to be a more than worthy adversary when he boldly attacks one of S.H.I.E.L.D.’s own. Capt. Rogers soon finds out that he can no longer trust anyone. He becomes a marked man and is the target of a nationwide manhunt. It is up to Captain America and his team to uncover the villain’s secret identity and prevent them from total world domination.
‘Captain America: The Winter Soldier’ is so good that you’ll wonder why they didn’t make the first film more like this one. The action, storyline, and great villain are what make this movie so much fun to watch. First of all, what stands out the most are the amazing stunts performed throughout. The action gets started right away as Captain America totally obliterates a bunch of pirates on a freighter. They are clearly no match for him! Another great scene was when he was cornered in an elevator. Nick Fury (Samuel L. Jackson) also gets in on the fun when he comes under attack on the street. He proves once again that he is truly a badass. Anthony Mackie’s Falcon character has some good moments too, but just wasn’t used enough. Also, it was an excellent decision to cut back on the humor and rightfully spend more time on the conspiracy hidden deep within S.H.I.E.L.D.’s walls. Robert Redford’s role as Secretary Pierce was predictable, yet, very well done. It was cool to see how the events of the original story tied into this movie. Finally, the Winter Soldier is one of the best villains seen on screen in a long time. His fight scenes with Captain America were extremely intense and his true identity will completely surprise you.
The only minor problems with this flick are the scenes between Captain America and Black Widow when they discuss his social life. It feels like it was thrown in at the last minute to add some element of humor. This does not work at all and should have been removed from the film completely.
Bottom Line: ‘Captain America: The Winter Soldier’ is a solid film that is definitely worth the steep price of admission.
