Movie review: Caprica

In the beginning, 58 years before the "Battlestar Galactica" series, industrialist Daniel Graystone lived on Caprica and developed the first Cylon body. After tragedy strikes his family Daniel attempts to load a personality into the Cylon body with disturbing consequences which even he doesn't realize at first. Joseph Adama, father of William Adama, recognizes the moral line Daniel has crossed and becomes an opponent of Daniel's intentions.

Eric Stoltz (Daniel), Esai Morales (Joseph), Paula Malcomson (Amanda), Alessandra Torresani (Zoe), Magda Apanowicz (Lacy), Polly Walker (Clarice), Sasha Roiz (Sam), Bian Markinson (Jordan), Sina Najafi (William).

The first episode or two of Caprica are a bit rough with a vertical learning curve that sets us up well for the rest of the series. Although based on a sci-fi world spawned out of the Battlestar Galactica series, Caprica includes issues of morality, organized crime, science, technology, love, lust, you name it just about everything is here. The series moves along well with multiple parallel storylines and good variety between them.

Acting was very nicely done in this series. Stoltz was actually a bit more personable than usual and seemed to have good chemistry with Malcomson. Morales was an excellent choice as Joseph Adama and played well against Roiz and others. Torresani continued doing well with as Zoe though her role was a bit decreased. Walker was another shining star bringing nice depth to her part. The remainder of the supporting cast was solid and did very nicely.

Camera work, sets, and backgrounds were all of good quality as expected from a higher budget series. Effects, strong CGI along with physical work, were very well done and exhibited the attention that went into the series. Dialogue was good and move the story along well. Sound and soundtrack were also of good quality.

Overall Caprica is an enjoyable series that answers some long asked questions about BSG and the creation of Cylons. Though a bit heavy on the drama, sci-fi and BSG fans will likely enjoy this one.

With some sexuality and violence this should be fine for teens and above.

Caprica is no longer showing in any Littleton Colorado movie theatres.
