Movie review: Burke and Hare; The Black Power Mixtape 1967-1975

Opening in New York and Los Angeles today are a couple of IFC distributed releases in Burke and Hare and The Black Power Mixtape 1967-1975.

Burke and Hare is a dark comedy about the notable crime that occurred in Edinburgh, Scotland back in the late 1820s.  The Black Power Mixtape is a documentary that uses footage from the stated time period in the title, as it depicts the times of the heated racial debate that befell on our country.  
 
For those in the Tampa Bay area, these titles should be available On-Demand in the upcoming weeks (or today).  And here’s the reviews:
 
BURKE AND HARE
 
The opening moments set the tone for Burke and Hare; a satire on the infamous crime that took place during the late 1820's in Edinburgh, Scotland.  It feels like a Mel Brooks' spoof where the characters are playfully keeping straight faces.  Based on the story, the movie actually follows the reported events fairly well.  The only difference is the realistic characters are sarcastically putting on a lively show…CONTINUE READING REVIEW…

THE BLACK POWER MIXTAPE 1967-1975
 
Documentaries are meant to educate and present a side of the story.  The good ones will also present the counter-argument (whether viable or not) even if it's trying to prove the exact opposite.  Just because this was presented from another country's point-of-view - despite having present day American activists narrate certain sequences - doesn't do enough.  Although it does showcase and educate on a few areas one may not have learned in school, this really doesn't state facts we don't already know and/or have seen in other media products.  Which leads to the viewer tuning out by the time 1973 hits…CONTINUE READING REVIEW…
