Battleship the board game comes to life on the big screen in this film with the same name. Fighting a battle at sea, the military defends Earth against alien invaders. Two naval officer brothers and their commanding officer step up to save the planet.
Taylor Kitsch (Alex Hopper), Alexander Skarsgard (Stone Hopper), Rihanna (Weps), Brooklyn Decker (Sam), Tadanobu Asano (Nagata), Hamish Linklater (Zapata), Liam Neeson (Shane), John Tui (The Beast), Gregory Gadson (Mick).
Battleship starts off a bit slow but quickly picks up the pace when the aliens arrive. From there the film flies along pretty well with larger than life CGI, action, and a few dramatic moments. The fun part of this one was the theory of another planet and the form the aliens took. Making them somewhat human kept it at least slightly believable. A nod to military veterans toward the end of the film was a nice touch.
Acting was decent with Kitsch and Skarsgard doing fairly well and apparently enjoying good chemistry. Rihanna could have put some actual effort into her role but instead felt somewhat arrogant. Asano did well in his role, as did Neeson and the remainder of the supporting cast.
Camera work was good and blended fairly well with the extensive CGI. Physical effects were good but CGI definitely dominated the film. Alien craft and even warships were incredibly large and detailed. Sets and backgrounds again blended pretty well with CGI but felt nicely done. Dialogue was decent but the drama was a bit overplayed. Sound was good and the soundtrack added well to the film.
Overall Battleship is a fun, surprisingly light Action Adventure film that moves along well despite the 2 hour plus run time. This is a good one for family movie night with older kids who enjoy action.
With plenty of action, violence, destruction, and some foul language this one should be fine for teens and above.
Battleship is no longer showing in any Littleton Colorado movie theatres.
