10 out of 10
I usually end up disappointed when I start looking forward to a film months before it releases. It is nearly impossible to live up to high hopes (get it?…'impossible'). Ever since the trailer released several months back I have been waiting for this one. 'Mission: Impossible - Ghost Protocol' is one of the few films to actually deliver and meet my lofty hopes. The story is great, the acting is great, the gadgets and action are great, the beginning is great, the ending is great. The film is just, what's the word…great!
Mission: Impossible - Ghost Protocol delivers on every level and is easily the best action movie of the year.
Any spoilers will be clearly marked so you can avoid reading them if you so choose.
Mission: Impossible - Ghost Protocol opens in Baltimore on December 16, 2011.
The Good
Mission: Impossible - Ghost Protocol (or 'M:I 4') if I could write you a love poem it may go something like this:
M:I 4 is like a fine work of art,
It seeps in through your pores and heads straight for your heart,
It starts off strong like you knew it would,
Then it keeps going hard like you hoped it could,
The mini mission at the start is exciting and fun,
You are totally hooked by the time the theme song is done,
But don't get up yet, here comes new info,
Don't worry film rookies they take it slow,
It doesn't take long to kick in more fun,
What's that, Tom Cruise in a full-speed run?
Explosions, hospitals and people to blame,
Cruise doesn't need a shirt to play their game,
This ragtag group will have to be better than the best,
If they fail this mission it will leave a worldwide mess,
Renner, Pegg and Patton are all in the crew,
Brad Bird is our director, and for this one, he's new,
The acting is fantastic, the direction is sound,
A better action film in 2011 cannot be found,
The gadgets are cool, the action top notch,
It's really hard to rhyme words with 'top notch,'
Fans of the series should love this one too,
Tie-ins to the first films, there are only a few,
Haven't seen them? Fret not, you can follow this tale,
They explain everything you need to know without fail,
It's 135 minutes and is rated PG-13,
But the violence is mild and the language is clean,
So, 'M:I 4' I want to thank you for such a good time,
But I must wrap this up before I run out of rhyme,
Action films take note, this is how things are done,
And may 2012 bring us just as much fun.
The Bad
I wasn't planning on giving this film a full 10 out of 10. But, as I sat back and tried to figure out what rating to give it I realized I had nothing to list in this section. So, decision made.
The Bottom Line
See this film. See it now and then, perhaps, see it later. Definitely pay the theater prices for this one. I saw it at an 'IMAX Lite' at an AMC theater. If they 'added' an IMAX to your existing theater, it's not real IMAX, but it is a bigger screen with more sound. A true IMAX theater screen is about 4 stories tall (in Baltimore you can see true IMAX at the Maryland Science Center). If your theater charges a lot more for their 'IMAX Lite' I wouldn't spend that extra money, but this is the type of film that should be enjoyed on a big screen of some kind (no, your 55" LED TV does not count). It really is one of the best action films in a long time. It's PG-13 but should be acceptable to most age groups since it's fairly mild in both violence and language.
