The only thing "predictable" about a Mouth show is that it is going to be different and exciting. Every live set is an original jam, including wildly different solos, styles and even guest musicians. For Mouth's show Friday night, regular fans and newcomers got a taste of the band's progressive side, featuring Matt Gader of the Cosmopolitics. Playing two sets, with Parts of Speech jamming in-between, Mouth led the Jazzhaus in a funky celebration of the Jayhawks' latest victory.
The three-man band of Mouth has developed a strong repertoire of songs that fill the dance floors with loving fans. Mouth always plays with well-practiced skill, but the best thrill of every live show is that they incorporate new styles, sounds and solos into each piece, changing the song while maintaining a standard of quality the crowd admires. Friday was no exception, with a progressive style incorporated into the recognizably fun, dance-able tunes.
Mouth's first set warmed up a small audience of loyal fans and folks already out partying with KU. Spring Break has thinned the crowd this week, but two other good shows also spread the party people out across town Friday. The Jazzhaus quickly filled up as the first set took off. Later arrivals were momentarily concerned they were late and missing the headliner, but were reassured to learn a second set was yet to come.
Parts of Speech, a modern jam band duo, held the audience in a trance through Mouth's break. This modern, psychedelic drum-and-keys sounded reminiscent of Depeche Mode combined with deep electronica and dancing rhythm. The crowd was impressed by Parts of Speech's introverted, groovy soundscapes. The dance-able hypnotic style was a cool juxtaposition to Mouth's progressive funk set. Parts of Speech easily fit the scene for the Jazzhaus audience, with any luck the band will play in Lawrence again soon.
For their second set Mouth brought the guitarist for the Cosmopolitics, Matt Gader on stage, adding more progressive rock and fusion jazz into their funky jams. Zach's snappy bass grooves, Jeremy's face-melting guitar riffs and Stephen's driving drum beats packed the dance floor for their entire set. The crowd was so entranced that they lingered for an encore; a much appreciated climax to the already fulfilling show.
