The Bottleneck got a double-dose of Mountain Sprout this weekend, with two nights in a row of fun, energetic bluegrass that blew the lid off the joint both nights. Stellar reviews of Friday night's show with The Ragbirds built up high expectations for Saturday night's concert, and Mountain Sprout and openers Cowgirl's Train Set and Grass Crack did not disappoint.
The local folk punkgrass outfit Cowgirl's Train Set started the night off right for a crowd that was already filling the bar up nicely early in the evening. This rising star in the local music scene is a fun, lively show, hopefully they will be playing again soon.
Grass Crack took the energy and ran with it, stoking the fires under a warmed up crowd. Featuring Hank Osterhout of Deadman Flats, the Tulsa-based bluegrass band pumped out a rapid-fire set list of happy jigs broken up by a slow waltz to pace the audience as they prepared for the eagerly awaited headliner. By now the bar was completely packed with party people drinking up and getting down.
Around 11 p.m. Mountain Sprout came to the stage, leading the crowd in a wild climax of raging bluegrass. The guys in Mountain Sprout have a penchant for partying and last night was no exception. Encouraging drinking and good times, the band played some fan favorites for a raucous audience that danced and sang along.
However crazy Friday night may have gotten, it could only be topped by the fun filled chaos that was Saturday night. Mountain Sprout has become a reliable source of good times in Kansas City and occassionally Lawrence, if you have yet to see them, do yourself a favor and be there next time!
