Now that summer is officially underway, vacations have started, classes have stopped, and there is (hopefully) a little more free time on the agenda. To take advantage of that, some of the year's most-anticipated books are hitting the shelves. Some of these books are new endeavors from old (and much-beloved) favorites, some are the newest (and one is the last) volume in popular series. If you like your summer reads a little (or a lot) scary, there is something for you. If you prefer time-travel and historical fiction, you are in luck (finally). If swords and magic are more your thing, there is something for you as well. In no particular order, here are some of the most-anticipated books of summer 2014:

1) Mr. Murder, by Stephen King: the master of terror writes a crime/detective novel. This should be an interesting change of pace from King’s usual horror feast, but is still sure to have its share of spine-chilling moments.

2) City of Heavenly Fire, by Cassandra Clare: the final installment in the Mortal Instruments series brings matters between the Clave and Sebastian to an adrenaline-packed conclusion. Not everyone will make it out alive.

3) Written in my Own Heart's Blood. by Diana Gabaldon: the latest and long-awaited volume in the time traveling historical series that follows the adventures of Claire and Jaime.

4) The Magician's Land, by Lev Grossman: the third and concluding volume of the Magicians trilogy.

5) Words of Radiance, by Brandon Sanderson: book two of The Stormlight Archive series.
