It’s my fifth visit in the last month, and I’m already looking forward to another delicious, just flown in, freshly prepared meal at Morgan’s Lobster Shack in Truckee.
The crab cakes are excellent: well seasoned, loaded with fresh crabmeat and the sandwich makes for a filling lunch. I haven’t gone wrong ordering the scallops, sautéed with garlic butter and served with greens tossed in a mild lemon aioli. An ample serving made a perfect dinner evoking warm summer nights near the Atlantic Ocean. The grilled salmon with Ponzu also excellent. And, dessert? Do not resist the made-on-the-spot beignets with maple syrup.
Just as I finished one meal, I looked on as the guy next to me received lightly breaded, fried scallops on a bed of spinach. I knew I’d be back just for that dish, but just before ordering, I met the owner, Shawn Whitney, who mentioned that he couldn’t get enough of the lobster grilled cheese. Served with coleslaw – just the kind I like (crunchy with no mayo but instead a gentle sesame sauce) – and an enormous order of fries, the sandwich welcomes each bite with big chunks of fresh Maine lobster. Paired with melted white cheddar on buttered sliced Truckee Sourdough, the sandwich captured the attention of a woman sitting nearby. She took a look at the sandwich, at me, back at the sandwich and asked, “Is that the lobster grilled cheese? It looks so good. We’re coming back for one of those” before returning to her salmon club.
I love the simplicity of the menu displayed on chalkboards suspended from the ceiling: Choose your fish (flown in nearly daily), choose how it’s cooked (fried, sautéed, grilled, steamed), then choose your seasoning (blackened, garlic-butter, lemon-caper, chili-lime, soy-citrus sauce, cucumber-dill-yogurt, tomato-olive) and how you’d like to eat it (sandwich, wrap, green salad).
Morgan’s has lobster rolls: classic and California style (Sriracha, avocado). Chicken is also available. Vegetarians will find something to rave about: kale, quinoa tabouleh or mac and cheese. Specials have included Ahi and salmon poke with house made tortilla chips and scallop ceviche, among many other delicacies. It’s official. Shawn and Heather Whitney have succeeded in bringing the best seafood to town. Take a place at the counter, enjoy each and every bite and chances are high you’ll see more dishes that you’d like to try.
