More News from "Under the Apple Tree"

Awkward first dates at a fishing hole, Nazi grafitti, and a local bond drive to raise money for the war in Europe surround the unravelling of Lazarus', the ghost in Ms. Searle's online graphic novel, mysterious death and relationship with Rosie, the young aspiring nurse, detective, and protoganist.

When the story opened, Rosie was a lovely girl experiencing the difficulty of moving to a new town and dealing with the stress of her father being at war.  Her anxiety was obvious, but she remained bright eyed and ready for her new life.  She made new friends, and was even able to attract the affections of the town hunk.

In the new slides, however, Rosie is protrayed as reclusive with bags under her eyes.  She is tormented by the ghost, obsessed with learning his story, and unable to form any significant attachment to her suitor.  Things are piling upon her, and I, at least, cringe thinking about what is in store.

Ms. Searle is certainly exploring Rosie's psyche through the wonderfully educational medium of WWII history and suburbian life.  As she learns about the town's history and her ghost-friend - who is certainly no Casper - I worry that something in Rosie's own past will be stirred up as well.  It's like watching someone slowly but surely creep near and stare into the Abyss, but you want them to jump, only to see what happens.
