Since December 2012, Mondo Taco has been a frequent stop for me when I’m in the LA County area. Mondo Taco has what you crave - anything that crawls, grows, or swims is combined with their world flavors for unbeatable delights. Proprietor, Sam Spector, has done a really great job with the food which carries through to his employees. You can see their pride in the food through their eyes. In February 2014, Sam made the move from the original, rather compact location on La Brea Avenue in Los Angeles to spacious, upbeat digs in AO retail/residential building on Colorado Avenue in Santa Monica. The new digs include two spacious dining rooms with bright colors and larger kitchen space.
Here’s a sampling of Mondo Taco’s menu:
Homemade Guacamole has a bunch of textures with creamy chunky avocado, zingy red onions, and bright red, sweet tomatoes. It’s great as a dip with tortilla chips or atop your favorite taco! Thumbs up!
Beefeater is braised short rib topped with horseradish slaw. This is my favorite taco! The flavors are so consistent and this time was no different. The flavor was just as great as I remember and it was loaded with a healthy helping of tender braised short ribs. Horseradish slaw was also just right with added crunchy cabbage texture. Thumbs up, way up!
Frisco is a handmade burger patty, grilled onions, cheddar, and 1000 island dressing. This was fantastic! The burger patty was fat (big), probably a quarter pound. The patty was juicy with great Worchester sauce in the background flavor. The grilled onions and melted cheddar paired nicely, as expected. Their thousand island sauce is more like an aioli, not too sweet but creamy. The homemade corn tortilla held together very well. Definitely an add to my favorites list! Thumbs up, way up!
The Grinder is ground beef, peppers, onions, salsa verde, and salsa roja. It was very simple in flavor, more like ground beef in an Americanized taco. If you add the chili sauce, it bumps up the flavor immensely.
Spanish Fly is soyrizo, peppers, and mushrooms. It definitely has the aroma of chorizo and tastes like it too. This is an amazing conversion of plant based food to taste like pork sausage. The spicy flavor was just right. I loved the meaty texture of the mushrooms. Thumbs up, way up!
Garlic Bomb is sautéed mushrooms, crispy onions, goat cheese, and garlic aioli. I love the texture of the mushrooms and crispy onions together. The garlic aioli was definitely da bomb! I love the strong garlic flavor as it carries you through the whole taco. Thumbs up, way up!
Alexander the Great is grilled chicken breast, whole marinated chipotle peppers, goat cheese, and cilantro crème. Wow! This taco will take your taste buds on an adventure. The smoky chipotle was a full force flavor but balanced out with the cilantro creme. The goat cheese added a creamy flavor and soft texture. Grilled chicken was the best protein choice as it doesn't tame any of the other flavors. Thumbs up, way up!
Taj Mahal is coconut shrimp, curry sauce, and diced red bell peppers. The coconut shrimp was perfectly fried. The coconut flavor worked well with the shrimp with a slightly sweet flavor. The curry sauce was very light and matched perfectly with the coconut. Thumbs up, way up!
Blueberry Panna Cotta was very creamy and tasted like something you would get at a white linen restaurant. The blueberry purée on top was perfect, not too sweet and packed full of blueberry flavor. Thumbs up, way up!
