Miley Cyrus takes on college and the FBI in So Undercover

Beyond her run on Hannah Montana and her music, Miley Cyrus hasn’t had the major success transitioning over to a film career. She clearly has a fan base or they wouldn’t keep delivering new movies with her. The latest So Undercover seems to see her attempting a bit of a different direction for her while still trying to maintain the comedic nature of what she is more known for. With the always great Jeremy Piven by her side, could this action comedy be the one that helps her step it up or just be another that blends onto the video shelf?

So Undercover follows a young private eye, who is recruited by the FBI to go undercover in a college sorority. While the trailer wasn’t great for this film it seemed like it may have potential to deliver a film that her normal fan base might seem to grab onto. Sadly this movie doesn’t really work on any level. The story has been done tons of times in variations ways so the formula was there, but Cyrus just can’t pull it off. Her attempt at trying to be a street smart private-eye as well as the out of place sorority sister just does not work. She seems to be struggling through the role and nothing she seems to do come off as believable. Piven who is always great is given very little to do other than pop in from time to time deliver some lines and walk away in a throw away role. The rest of the cast do ok playing the usual annoying college girls, including Kelly Osbourne, but once again none of them really offer anything to really push the film forward. At times the film gets a bit lost in its own mess trying to tackle the undercover aspect, comedy, and the coming of age finding oneself nature that never really decides what the real story is.

Clearly the younger audience and fans of Cyrus will be the ones that will see this and may actually enjoy it just to see her in action, but as far as an overall film just fails to deliver. Maybe she will find her step eventually, but the action comedy route is clearly not for her.
