There are times when in the middle of the day, Dorothy and I just feel like breakfast. On such occasions, one of our favorite breakfast restaurants is Denny’s. We are especially fond of the Denny’s in San Dimas. The last time we stopped in there for breakfast, we were delighted to find The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey Menu as their current seasonal menu.
Iced Tea, $2.29 & Decaf Coffee, $1.99
While we read through these special selections, I ordered my standard fresh brewed iced tea. This, in fact, is one of the reason I like Denny’s so. I can count on them to have fresh brewed iced tea any time of the day, any day of the year, in any city in America. Dorothy ordered a decaf coffee.
Dorothy and I both chose to order from the Hobbit Menu. This was the most colorful seasonal menu I can recall because of its tie-in to the movie. Best of all, though, was the selection of new items.
Build Your Own Hobbit Slam - $7.49
Dorothy ordered the Build Your Own Hobbit Slam, HOB-2, which she built with two eggs, Shire Sausage, hash browns and Pumpkin Patch Pancakes. The pancakes had great pumpkin flavor. Additionally, they came with a tasty, sweet pumpkin cream. Dorothy liked both of them.
Build Your Own Hobbit Slam - $7.49 plus additional premium for Seed Cake French Toast, $49, and Shire Sausage, $49
I too ordered the Build Your Own Hobbit Slam, HOB, which I built with two eggs, the Shire Sausage, hash browns and Seed Cake French Toast. I really liked the Seed Cake French Toast though it tasted more like lemon cake than French toast.
Although I liked the sugar glaze, like that on cinnamon rolls, I agree with Dorothy that it was unnecessary. The French toast was sweet enough. In fact, the pancakes too were sweet enough that we left the syrup untouched.
The Shire Sausage was a split decision. We agreed that the closest we could identify the flavor is that it might be a bratwurst. Dorothy, who likes normal pork sausage, does not like brats so she didn’t care for the Shire Sausage. I, on the other hand, rarely order pork sausage. I liked the Shire Sausage for its spices and the fact that it seemed less greasy than normal breakfast sausage.
The eggs were done perfectly as over medium. The hash browns came out crispy like we ordered.
Though I don’t have our server’s name, I really liked her service. She upheld Denny’s reputation with us for having exceptionally good service.
Delicious food in good portions, pleasant atmosphere, and great service all came together here. This dining experience rates 5 stars compared to coffee shops and diners.
