Barbera wines from Italy’s Piedmont region are one of my go to wines. They are nice to drink as an everyday wine, while watching a movie, cooking dinner or even watching football. With their fruit forward starts with low tannins and nice acidity, they pair well with most foods, and they are priced reasonably. There are some Barberas that do require more thought.
Michele Chiarlo La Court Barbera d'Asti Superiore Nizza DOCG 2009 is one of those Barberas to think about. A single vineyard Barbera, “La Court’s” grapes are from the DOCG region of Nizza. The “La Court” ages 12 months in oak before being bottled, making an extremely rich and complex style of Barbera. It is bright ruby red in the glass with aromas of tart cherry, hints of red berries, leather and earth. The palate has all of the fruit with dark chocolate, spices and earthiness. The tannins are smooth and nice acidity balances out the fruits and it has a long finish. Enjoy this wine with grilled red meats and even pasta in red sauces.
