“It is hard to find any facet of our modern pop culture that he (Michael Jackson) has not influenced. He has inspired new dance forms with his own original and signature dance moves. His legendary music remains as poignant and relevant today as when it first took audiences by storm. Leader and dreamer, Michael never stopped believing in a world where justice, peace and love would always prevail.
‘Take a minute to imagine what would happen if Michael offered you his famous hat, his penny loafer shoes, his sunglasses or even his legendary glove. Then imagine that these items unlocked the door to Michael’s genius and irrepressible energy.
‘Michael Jackson ONE is inspired by Michael’s thrilling agility, musical grace and the stories he loved so much. Four misfits discover that they can access Michael’s genius to bring the world the messages we heard in his music. Messages we want to share with you.”
Excerpt from: We’re All One”, Michael Jackson One, Cirque Du Soleil program for the show.
In the events of time, it is often the appurtenances that are branded into the minds of the many. Ultimately it is the divine element of every man that is recurrently forgotten. Could it be that we recognize the sanctity of ourselves so well that we take it for granted? We are all beautiful and talented and gifted and lovable, but we are all not aware of it. Maybe we simply forget as we move through the rush of the day. Often we see only our differences.
Before you assume that this is about religiosity, I must convey to you that it is not. It is only about the place in your heart that Michael Jackson sang about in his wonderful recording “Heal the World”. It’s not about something in a church, it is about the power that exists inside of you. It is in fact, in all of us. It is conceivably what justly connects us. Michael endeavored to teach the world about love through his music. Michael Jackson One makes his message plain. We are one.
The production is called “One” because it is meant to show us our likenesses, not our differences. It is meant to let people know that we can be enlightened and we can be empowered if we have something to believe in. Michael believed in love, and he strove to share his belief with every song he wrote and with every note he sang. In the stage production of Michael Jackson One, we find four people who believe in all that Michael believed in. They were seen as square pegs by those around them. Or otherwise put, they are seen as different. However, they want to fit in. We all want to be a part of life! It is Michael Jackson who opens the door to change for them.
The production actually begins by revealing how effortless change can be made, especially if it is not for the better. We first enter Neverland, whose doors are shown opening. Then we see paparazzi rushing through the isles taking pictures of people in the audience. As their pictures are snapped they appear on the screen with some form of description written over them. It is instant tabloid. It is the assurance that anyone can take your picture and publish something nasty about you. There will be somebody who will believe it. What I like about the way this begins is it moves right in and aggressively takes the power away from all the negative sensationalism that everyone has been drenched in. It is in fact the exact opposite of what Michael One wants us to portray. His message is love one another, we are one.
Michael’s message was unquestionably designed to touch our hearts. He perceived his music as a heavenly gift. A gift that was given to him directly from God, a gift that he was called to share with all who could hear his message. He said to his crew in “This is It” that love is important, we have to love each other, bring love back into the world. He even tells them “We are one”. It was Michael’s belief that his calling was to share God’s message of peace and love and unity with the world. He went to every continent on this earth spreading his word. His message was love. In fact, it seems that for Michael, music was a spiritual experience. On different occasions Michael’s message was in his music, so what he had to say about simply writing a song is important
“Well, the songwriting process is something very difficult to explain because it’s very spiritual. It’s, uh…You really have it in the hands of God, and it’s as if it’s been written already – that’s the real truth. As if it’s been written in its entirety before you were born and you’re just really the source through which the songs come. Really. Because there is…they just fall right into your lap in its entirety. You don’t have to do much thinking about it. And I feel guilty having to put my name, sometimes, on the songs that I – I do write them – I compose them, I write them, I do the scoring, I do the lyrics, I do the melodies but still, it’s a…it’s a work of God.”
Michael Jackson: Quotes on his relationship with God / July 8, 2009 — Kedar
Unfortunately, if you have not followed Michael you may not really understand how Michael’s music truly fits together to give counsel to those who have shadowed him for years. For instance, if you have been following Michael you can actually feel what he is going through when he sings Stranger from Moscow. A mist falls across the audience and suddenly you are walking in the rain with Michael, fallen from grace. Although this was happening in an auditorium, there was a level of intimacy about it. The music came out of the chairs straight into your ears. It was as if Michael was singing to you. You have to learn about Michael for it to really enlighten you. It is incredible. There is so much happening that you may have to see it more than once… I saw it twice, and I believe I would have more revelations from this production if I went yet again. I went with an MJ fan, who will talk more about the stage production. Peacelover. shares her wonderful description of Michael Jackson One below.
June 28 & 29th I was able to see Michael Jackson ONE Cirque du Soleil show in Las Vegas for the 2nd and 3 times. Each time I sat in a different part of the theater and each one had a different perspective. The last time sitting in the back, I was able to see much more.
I have seen the MJ Immortal Cirque show, and that seems to focus on Michael Jackson's music. MJ ONE however seems to focus on Michael Jackson's message of ONENESS, Love, Peace and Unity. The first words in the show are a stern warning from some unseen authority figure "DON'T TOUCH THE GLOVE!" Which appears to be a symbol of Michael's magic. The 4 characters identified as "misfits" each are given a gift from a treasure box, glove, sunglasses, fedora and dancing shoes. Each gift helps the misfits find their inner magic (inner Michael). Michael's messages are interspersed between the awesome Music and Cirque performances, each one more astonishing than the last! The special effects are stunning! Michael's words come alive when he tells us we are all the same, we should all be loving each other wholeheartedly. Can you feel it? His message to take care of the planet is blazoned across the theater screens with Earth Song. He bestows his magic dust upon the 4 characters in a holographic image in Man in the Mirror. The show ends with Michael's reminder from “This is It”.
It’s an adventure . . .
(Exhales with a laugh), it’s a great adventure . . .
There’s nothing to be nervous about. They just want wonderful
Experiences, they want escapism.
We want to take them places they've never been before.
We want to show them talent like they've never seen before.
So give your all . . . And, I love you all and we’re a family.
Just know that, we’re a family. And we’re bringing love back into the world.
To remind the world that love is important.
To love each other, that we’re all one
