Those of us who study metaphysics do so because we want to understand the nature of reality—we want to know why and how we exist. Some would call metaphysics a branch of philosophy, but I maintain that it’s a branch of science. After all, mainstream scientists spend their time attempting to analyze and understand reality, too, don’t they? I’m not the only one who feels this way: William F. Lawhead, in his book, The Philosophical Journey, an Interactive Approach, notes that Aristotle, one of the West’s leading Philosophers and Scientists, did not differentiate between science and philosophy; for Aristotle, there was no difference as he did his research. I think the gap between metaphysics/philosophy and mainstream science is quickly narrowing, and so I wasn’t really surprised when Orlando Lightworker, Keri Nola, a clinical counselor specializing in personal growth and healing, introduced me to the field of Neurofeedback last week.
Keri shared with me that “Neurofeedback, also known as EEG Biofeedback, is essentially personal training for the brain, and it’s based on five decades of research helping people learn about and change their brain waves.” She explained to me that it utilizes the power of modern computers to capture and analyze brainwave activity, and then that important information is ‘fed-back’ to the brain. The brain is essentially able to “look in a mirror,” see what’s off track, and then re-regulate and improve its functioning." And then…she hooked me up to the computer to give it a try!
During my 35 minute session, I closed my eyes and listened to music that was both relaxing and invigorating at the same time. I went into a light meditative state and felt like I was soaring through the universe on a beautiful violet cloud that was continually moving in a circular direction, and every so often waves of brilliant yellow and green would float across the violet horizon. I also noticed some flashes of orange, and a tiny bit of blue. Afterwards, I felt peace and joy at the core of my being, and I had a great night’s sleep. It was my intention going in that my brain would figure out that my body is 20 pounds overweight and re-wire itself so that I would start eating properly--interestingly, I’ve been craving broccoli and herbal tea instead of soda and doughnuts.
I asked Keri what she experienced after her first session and she said that she noticed a decrease in anxiety, significant improvement in the quality of her sleep and she felt a tremendous amount of past life clearing in her chest, followed by great feelings of joy. As she shared her experience with me, I remembered the colors I saw during my session, and it occurred to me that perhaps my brain was balancing my chakras--I definitely felt balanced and joyful following the session.
Keri also shared with me that in addition to helping with depression, sleep problems, chronic pain, and weight issues, Neurofeedback training has also helped children, adolescents and adults with many challenges, including: fatigue, stress, irritability, anger management, disturbances in attention, concentration, mood reactivity, learning disabilities, autistic and developmental disorders; acquired brain injury, and athletic performance.
