The sci-fi genre produces about as much if not more films as the horror and fails more often than not. Most of them come off a bit cheesy and lame, but it’s sometimes the same thing that makes them work. The latest film to tackle this area is Metal Shifters.
Metal Shifters giant iron statue that is rampaging a small town after an alien bacteria infests he metal and animates it to life. While the premise is silly, this film works on some levels. This movie isn’t good, but it is old school fun on some levels. Shifters have the feel of these kinds of movies made in the 70s and 80s in both premise and look. Imagine something like the cheesy brilliance of Stephen Kings Maximum Overdrive and make it a junk robot statue and you have Metal Shifters. The acting is nothing all that great, but serves its purpose. This originally aired as a Syfy channel movie, but is much better than most of the ones they show. The filmmakers took this goofy premise and took some classic approaches. There are a lot of the old school sideways camera angles which makes this movie feel like the older films like this and adds to the fun. The effects weren’t perfect, but well enough to get the point across and still miles above the normal Syfy channel films.
Complete with cheesy dialogue, a wacky premise, and even sillier way to stop the menacing alien invasion, Metal Shifters delivers exactly what it intended to do, have fun. If you love old school sci-fi or the drive-in style genre, you will have fun with this movie and who knows the Shifters could return so be warned.
