Dr. Robert Campbell (Sean Connery) has stumbled upon the find of the century. He is in the back country of a central American jungle. He has found the answer to the plaque of the 20th century. He has found the cure for cancer. He has been with a village for some time and he has been observing the local medicine man (Angelo Barra Moreira). He watches him go up to the canopy of the rain forest and bring down a flower. Now Campbell goes up and brings down the flower and has it tested. He notices that it has a certain characteristic to it when he used it on a women who had a small tumor. Miraculously the tumor goes away. Problem is he can't reproduce it.
He has found the cure to cancer and can't reproduce it. He contacts the company that is backing his mission and wants some help. Dr. Rae Crane (Lorraine Bracco) arrives on the scene, but is not either one of the people that he had requested. Campbell is irritated that they sent a woman for one and that they didn't send the one's he requested. He does not know Dr. Crane, who he later nicknames Bronx, but he has already come to the conclusion that he does not like her. Problem is he does like her, he just doesn't know it yet.
Campbell relays the information to Bronx of what he has found. She wants to bring in everybody to find the cure but they really don't have a lot of time. You see Dr. Miguel Omega (Jose Wilker) and his road crew are on the way towards the village to build a road into the forest. Campbell is running out of time.
Campbell has been in the jungle for a very long time. He has not only been living in this village but he has been in other villages. In one village he was able to derive a pain killer but in the process the village was infected with something that Campbell had brought in with him and the village died. Campbell is very hesitant in bringing many others onto the scene because he doesn't want another occurrence.
Can the pair get along enough to be able to find the cure and beat the the construction that is coming in time? You simply must watch this movie to find out. This film has many thought provoking subjects in it. Firstly, The Rain Forest and the possibility of finding cures for diseases within it. Secondly, should we be cutting down the forest and destroying our ozone in the process. Finally are the companies that are only looking for profit with little regard for the people they inconvenience. Director John Mctiernan does a wonderful job with the chemistry of the actors and the subjects they must touch on. You feel the warmth of the characters coming together and you really are left with thoughts about the film long after it's over. You also get a light hearted romance comedy in the process. Enjoy.
