On September 24, 2013, Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. premiered on the ABC network. Marvel fans the world over gathered in front of their TVs and computers to witness the highly anticipated return of Agent Phil Coulson (Clark Gregg), and catch a glimpse of the inner workings of the secretive organization some of us were introduced to just in the past few years.
The pilot episode and the four others that followed (so far) have certainly not disappointed this writer. While there is plenty of action, from super-powered brawls, to hand-to-hand combat (with a little martial arts and street fighting thrown in), we also get to see the more bureaucratic side of the Marvel Cinematic Universe as well. From intelligence gathering, extraction of artifacts and assets, and even the termination of uncontainable threats, the writers and producers certainly aren’t pulling their punches with this series. And in true Marvel fashion, Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. ties-in to the last big screen installment of the MCU, Iron Man 3, by further explaining the Extremis serum, and by having Nick Fury (Samuel L. Jackson) make a cameo appearance.
While the characters and plot still have room to grow, this writer would definitely recommend this show to any true Marvel fan. The next episode airs on November 5, 2013, giving any newcomers plenty of time to catch up.
