Spoof movies have become a genre that rarely puts anything out that works anymore. It seems to be an easy genre to constantly deliver, yet one that hardly ever delivers the goods. When the Scary Movie series hit it was the rare gem that worked really well, but when the Wayans exited involvement it seemed to somehow continue, but never really deliver the same quality. Now Marlon Wayans has returned to the genre to deliver another entry this time tackling the found footage obsession with A Haunted House.
A Haunted House follows a young couple who has just moved in together, but realize they are not alone as strange things start to happen. They set out to stop this demon hiring everything from a priest to ghost hunters in hopes to save their relationship, but more importantly their sex life. This is another one of those gems of a spoof movie that delivers. It’s over the top and raunchy, but still manages to deliver a cohesive simple story to keep things moving along. The first half works the best dealing with the silliness of their relationship along with the demon hauntings really knocking it out of the park. The second half still works pretty well, but does start to veer more into the silliness realm losing a bit of what made it so great in the first half. Thanks to a great supporting cast featuring Cedric The Entertainer, David Koechner and Nick Swardson they bring the wild and crazy antics of this possession film full circle. Here they do not just try to mimic and mock the other films, but instead use moments or aspects of these films and create their own fun supernatural adventure.
Clearly you have to be a fan of this genre, but if you are this is easily one another great addition to it. The trailers do not do this movie justice as they come off a bit played out, but in reality this film works and goes way before playing it safe to deliver a raunchy found footage spoof that will sure to leave your belly sore with laughter.
