And it is time that she gets that recognition. She also has a style that is quite hypnotizing. Hollenback, a Sterling, Illinois native, currently resides in southern California and is pursuing her dream in The Golden State. In fact, according to her bio, she has always dreamed of living in California.
The title track "Things We Leave Behind" pulls you in and takes hold. It delves into the struggles of life and death. It is a haunting song with top-notch lyrics. This song alone is worth picking up the CD. "No Guitars in Hell" aptly shows off her gritty rock side and then the last track "Six Strings" brings it home. It is a work that digs deep as it seeks answers. Oh, there is plenty more, as that is just a few examples of the talent that flows on this CD.
Leaving a small town and landing in southern California is no easy adventure. It takes guts and confidence, and yet, there is a vulnerability in it as well. One can and will adapt or will fold up the tent and move away. The things left behind are never far from the mind and it certainly plays out in ways not always understood. When one is a singer and songwriter, it can help the process. It also can tug at the heartstrings.
The decision is both happy and sad as the dream is pursued. After some time, new dreams, goals and friends emerge.
In 2006, Hollenback quit her band in Illinois. She packed up her car and drove from Illinois to Los Angeles. In a sense, "Things We Leave Behind" lets the listener in on that journey and more. Hollenback took the style she developed in Illinois and brought it with her to California and perfected it.
She bares her soul in this slickly produced and superbly written effort. From the outset, this is a CD that sends a message to the listener. What that listener seeks to get from it is up to them.
Her focus is folk, rock and blues and those when those rock elements win out, it rolls for sure. No doubt her love of Fleetwood Mac, Stevie Nicks and Tom Petty are never far from her mind.
It is the mix that is so appealing. Her recent effort is described as a mix of "old and new that takes the listener on a journey back in time." That journey also brings the listener back "to the days when talent, powerful vocals and intimate lyrics ruled the world," as the bio continued.
