Fred Astaire: The Early Years at RKO; The Toast of Hollywood

We used to give Turner Classic Movies and Robert Osborne the world.
And words.
Alas, the marquee is dim since TCM offers nothing but emails.
So Santa asked us if we would mention, just once, two new CDs from TCM. The first was The Toast of Hollywood, a tribute to Mario Lanza. The full range of Lanza's vocal brilliance is a glittering compilation of popular ballads, opera arias, classic show tunes and jewels from the Great American Songbook that includes six previously unreleased gems. Nice. Or sounds it looks.
The new one is Fred Astaire: The Early Years at RKO featuring 31 songs that showcase Astaire’s vocal performances from such classic films as Top Hat, Swing Time and Shall We Dance. In these and other films, Astaire introduced songs by the greatest “American Songbook” composers, including Irving Berlin, Jerome Kern and George and Ira Gershwin. The songs on the 2-CD set have long since become standards and include “Night And Day,” “Cheek To Cheek,” “The Way You Look Tonight,” “They All Laughed,” “They Can't Take That Away From Me” and “Nice Work If You Can Get It.” The set also includes rare alternate takes and two solo performances by Astaire’s most famous partner, Ginger Rogers. Sadly, the liner notes are written by the greatly overrated and obvious Michael Feinstein (whose last name sounds like "Frankenstein")..
