Marcella's does gluten-free pizza justice

It is no secret that gluten-free pizza is hard to do right.  The taste may be right on, but the texture is hard to get just right.  Columbus has many restaurants that offer decent gluten-free pizza, but Marcella's may have just moved to the top of that list.

Marcella's, part of the Cameron Mitchell Restaurant group, began offering gluten-free options over a year ago, but has just expanded the menu to include pizza.  Not only have they added pizza, but eleven different varieties!

I met up with another gluten-free friend to give the new gluten-free pizzas a try.  We had a hard time deciding which pizza to order, but ended up settling on the Margherita, which is topped with mozzarella, plum tomatoes and fresh sweet basil.  The gluten-free pizzas are the same size as the regular pizzas, about 14 inches and rectangular in shape.  The pizzas arrived on a wood cutting board-like dish and the board was covered with parchment paper.  The crust was thin and had bubbles in spots, just like a "normal" gluten-filled crust would.  In fact, I asked our waiter to make sure they were gluten-free and we were assured that we had received the gluten-free pizza.  The pizza was amazing!  I was floored with how much the crust tasted like the "real thing"!  The texture was unlike the texture of most gluten-free pizzas - it was thin, crispy and chewy all at the same time!  This crust was not crumbly at all.  Both my friend and I finished off our entire pizzas!  Yes, we each ate an entire pizza, it was that good!

After finishing up our dinner, I asked to speak with the manager to get some more information about the pizza crust.  I wanted to know what type of flour was used in the pizza dough.  Imagine my surprise when I was told that they use Bob's Red Mill Gluten-Free Pizza Crust Mix!  This is one of my favorite pizza crust mixes, though I have never had results as good as what I enjoyed at Marcella's!  It must be the pizza stones & hot ovens they use!

The gluten-free pizzas range in price from $9.95 to $12.95.  Make sure to stop in Monday - Friday during Happy Hour for half price pizzas!!  I know that we will be back to enjoy these delicious pizzas in the very near future!

Marcella's has 2 locations in the Columbus area - Polaris & Short North and one in Scottsdale, AZ.
