The friendly neighborhood Spider-Man is back for a second installment of the Amazing Spider-Man franchise, and it fails to outshine the previous blockbuster hit, The Amazing Spider-Man. The film is directed by Marc Webb who also directed the first film, and stars Andrew Garfield, Emma Stone and Jamie Foxx.
The Amazing Spider-Man 2 was a major disappointment, especially since the first film was in fact, amazing. The sequel started off with Jaime Foxx’s character, Max Dillon working as an electrician that nobody speaks to or cares about. He’s a pathetic, sad character that when mishaps occur in the film; turn him into a bitter, disgruntled villain, named Electro. Majority of the film is centered around the terror that may ensue upon the civilians of New York City, from evil villains Electro and Green Goblin.
The Amazing Spider-Man 2 was all over the place as far as plot and character development. The character of Electro, which anyone could’ve portrayed, was weak. He was not intimidating, his “fight” scenes with Spider-man were not entertaining and not even long enough to be entertained by. There were so many different stories swirling throughout the film (i.e. Peter’s father, the entire storyline with Harry Osbourne and his daddy issues, Gwen and Peter’s relationship) that it was too much wrapped into one film. The film turns very dark at one point, and that too felt a little out of place for the rest of the tone that director created for this setting.
Andrew Garfield, Emma Stone and Sally Field reprise their roles from The Amazing Spider-man. The acting by the aforementioned cast is excellent. Andrew Garfield is the perfect Peter Parker/Spider-man. He has an exquisite charm that although geeky, he is funny and admirable. Stone is a great Gwen Stacie with her quick wit, and ability to exude the vulnerability her character endures is captivating. Field is back as the loveable and wise Aunt Mae, she creates this wonderful sense of safeness whenever Peter is at home.
In conclusion, The Amazing Spider-Man 2 is recommended to anyone who enjoys the character of Spider-Man, the comics and great acting done by Andrew Garfield and Emma Stone.
