Passover begins March 25. For those who keep Kosher, finding appropriate gluten-free foods may present a challenge. One of the main rituals of Passover is seder, which occurs on the first night, or two nights, or Passover, and includes ritual foods such as matzoh. Throughout the holiday, which in 2013 starts on March 25 and ends on April 2.
During the holiday, foods that are leavened are removed from the diet. Matzah bread and Matzo crackers are usually a big part of the week. What does someone do who has food allergies and follows a gluten-free diet? Manischewitz created a Kosher product line that is gluten-free. Their products will be released in time for Passover 2013. Their Kosher products include gluten-free Matzo-style squares, chocolate chip cookie cereal, gluten-free crackers, and many other products. A complementary company to Manischewitz is Guiltless Gourmet, who now makes Kosher nut bars.
The Gluten-Free Matzo-Style Crackers are great. They do contain eggs as an FYI if you have an egg allergy. The product is lactose free. The cracker is slightly toasted along the edges and tastes similar to other (unsalted) Matzo-style crackers. The health factor is lacking, with 1 cracker being 110 Calories, containing 2.5 grams of fat, and containing no fiber. Overall, this cracker is good.
Manischewitz Gluten Free Crackers (Salted) are lactose free. Just like the Matzo-Style Crackers, these too contain eggs. They taste very similar to a thin soda cracker and have a good texture. The health factor of these crackers could also be better, with 10 crackers containing 120 Calories, 2.5 grams of fat, 420mg sodium, and 0 fiber.
Manischewitz created a sugary gluten-free cereal called Magic Max's Chocolate Chip Cookie Cereal. This cereal is very good, but a little goes a long way. It's a cookie cereal, so it is extremely sweet. If you are looking for a nutrition packed cereal, you probably aren't looking at cookie cereals, and you are correct. If you are looking for a cereal that can also double as a dessert, this is it.
Guiltless Gourmet Cashew Cranberry Flaxseed Crunch Bar and Guiltless Gourmet Almond Cranberry Flaxseed Crunch Bar are both vegan, gluten-free, made with non-GMO ingredients, and Kosher. These pack some nutritional punch. However, they do contain 11 grams of sugar. If you like a good nut bar, these are delicious!
