Mama Won't Fly is a funny, mildly suspenseful cross-country adventure that delivers comical lines by talented actors and actresses volunteering their time and energy to share this funny play with appreciative viewers.
The lead actress, Mama, is a bit mysterious and a tad of a nag due to her pushy support of romantic opportunities for her daughter. She also is a clever planner which the audience learns as the plot unfolds. Meanwhile, the cute and bubbly bride-to be, Mama’s future daughter-in-law seems unable to escape bad luck, and gets in several scrapes and accidents as the play develops.
Mama’s daughter is tasked with getting both of these characters to her brother’s wedding on-time and the responsibility seems overwhelming as obstacle after obstacle presents themselves. Vehicle after vehicle becomes necessary, too, on their long journey, and they finally arrive in transportation about as foreign to a wedding celebration as one can imagine.
Some of the best scenes are set in the towns in which the trio elects to spend the night. In Texas, a drunken lady and funny bartender steal the spotlight with witty lines perfectly delivered. Then, a picnic with Texan relatives creates havoc and maybe a death.
Continuing Thursdays through Saturdays until Dec.14 at 8 p.m. at the Marathon Community Theater, Mama Won't Fly lasts until 10:30 p.m. with a 15-mintue intermission, which is a great opportunity to stretch legs, enjoy black and white photos of Keyswide residents who are recipients of Take Stock in Children scholarships, visit restrooms and enjoy beverages and sweets from the snack bar.
Marathon Community Theater is at 5101 Overseas Hwy. For pre-arranging tickets, call 305-743-0994 or visit www.marthontheater.com. Don’t miss this hilarious race against the clock, and Alabama to California caper.
