Maltz Jupiter Theatre get's a "A Plus" for "The King and I" casting. If you are going to produce a show about an English teacher that is hired by the King Of Siam to educate his dozens of Asian children, you need to hire an Asian actor as the King, and dozens of Asians for the children. As one of the top ten regional theatres in our Nation it is important that Maltz Jupiter Theatre is the beacon of light for ethnic artists and casting. Their marketing team under Artistic Director Andrew Kato went above and beyond to find talented Asian performers for the most breathtaking musical of this South Florida theatre season, and they should be supported and commended for doing so! "Don't miss this epic production of The King and I!" BroadwayGlobal and Theatre Chat.

The music by Richard Rodgers with Book and Lyrics by Oscar Hammerstein II is not only some of their best work, but one of the best Broadway musicals ever written. "I Whistle A Happy Tune", "Hello Young Lovers", "Getting To Know You", "Something Wonderful", "I Have Dreamed", "Shall We Dance" are just a few favorites. These songs will leave you humming and skipping as you exit the most magnificent production of "The King and I" that has been produced in our region.

The direction and choreography by Macia Milgrom Dodge is superb! The King played by Wayne Hu has some big shoes to fill, as many of this audience, including myself remember Yul Brynner. Wayne Hu's voice was perfect for the role and his acting was just as effective. Again thanks to Maltz Jupiter Theatre for casting the lead with a talented Asian artist. Roles for ethnics are far and few between in show business, Maltz gets a "job well done".

Michelle Ragusa as Anna was just as important in casting. Ragusa's voice resembles the resonating pure sounds of Julie Andrews and her acting was, shall we say "Something Wonderful". The star of this show is Kay Trinidad as Tuptim. Kay has the most glorious vocals that Florida has heard in years. Her love interest JP Moraga as Lun Tha has a difficult role to sing with Trinindad's stunning voice, but because JP Moraga has chiseled stunning good looks the chemistry is magical.

David Shih as The Kralahome and Steve Carroll (Captain Orton/Sir Ramsey) make their mark in this large group of talents. Leandre Thivierge as Anna's son is a highlight of the children. His acting was honest and voice radiant. Quinn Weis as Chulalongkorn rounds out the lead roles.

The entire cast includes Marika Abe (Ensemble), Saki Aoyama (Ensemble), Nathaniel Braga (Ensemble), Steve Carroll (Captain Orton/Sir Ramsay), Carmen Garcia (Ensemble), Barron-Vaun Grosch (Royal Prince), Josephine Grosch (Royal Wife), Natsuko Hirano (Ensemble), Takashi Hosoi (Ensemble), Wayne Hu (The King), Mattine Jensen (Royal Princess), Christine Toy Johnson (Lady Thiang), Dennis Kenney (Asst. Choreographer, Dance Captain, Ensemble), Nanako Kondo (Royal Princess), Christy Laflamme (Ensemble), Sophia Liano (Royal Princess), Elizabeth Michels (Royal Princess), Sarah Michels (Royal Princess), JP Moraga (Lun Thai), Heshman Nair (Royal Prince), Rumi Oyama (Ensemble), Charles Pang (Ensemble), Zilong Pu (Ensemble), Michele Ragusa (Anna), Neddy Reagan (Royal Prince), Solana Rudnitsky (Royal Princess), David Shih (The Kralahome), Sai Somboon (Phra Alack/Ensemble), Angelina Tharitimanont (Royal Princess), Leandre Thivierge (Louis), Kay Trinidad (Tuptim), Amber Wang (Royal Princess), Benjamin Wang (Royal Prince), Quinn Weis (Chulalongkorn), Mandarin Wu (Ensemble), and Peter King Yuen (Ensemble).

"The King and I" production team standouts are Carbonell Award winning Sound Designer Marty Metz, who is still Florida finest. Eric Wright (The Puppet Kitchen) who's work shines in "The Small House of Uncle Thomas". Some theatres act out this song as a ballet, the choice to present this section with Wayang Puppets was quite entertaining and displayed much discipline in the art of puppetry. Lighting Designer Matthew Richards purples popped like Asian sunsets, with contrast bouncing off the Scenic Design from Narelle Sissons and detailed Costumes Designs of Leon Wiebers.. the magic of these elements are astonishing!

Special thanks must be given to "The King and I" sponsors Roe Green and the Roe Green Foundation, Joe and Kathy Savarese, Homecare America and the National Endowment for the Arts.
