Malese Jow took the stage at Hotel Café in Hollywood to a packed crowd. "The Show" featured performances by Jow’s musician boyfriend, Austin Charles, and former cast member of Star Crossed, Titus Makin Jr..
Jow who is best known for her roles on Nickelodeons, Unfabulous, and The CW’s Vampire Diaries recently revealed to AfterBuzz TV that she’s making the transition into music, "Now that I'm in my 20s, I'm more secure; I know who I am – I'm a writer. So, it's easier now."
Jow sang a handful of originals with a sound comparable to Taylor Swift’s early albums. In between songs, Jow was oozing with excitement explaining the story behind each of her originals. Jow moved to Los Angeles with her family via Okalahoma when she was just 9 years old to pursue acting. One would assume that she’d have abandoned her country roots more than a decade later, but this is actually where she shines the best.
The highlight of “The Show” was her cover of Miranda Lambert’s “Mama’s Broken Heart,” which was co-penned by one of Jow’s biggest influences, Kacey Musgraves. As Jow finds her footing as a singer-songwriter, it was evident to the crowd that this is the route she should take. Another great moment was her duet with boyfriend Austin Charles, their voices blended together perfectly and their harmonies complimented one another.
Although she’s not currently signed to a record label, Jow is writing her own songs and will most likely be picked up within the next year. Jow’s remained calm about the whole process revealing to AfterBuzz TV that, “Right now I'm really enjoying the creative freedom and performing wherever I want, writing whatever I want, and working with whoever I want.”
Jow isn’t the only actress turned singer attempting to break into country music. Pretty Little Liars star, Lucy Hale has had a successful transition into the country music field, to a crowd who isn’t always opened to non-Nashville based musicians.
If Jow keeps it up, there’s no doubt that she could be the next big thing in country music!
