Director Robert Stormberg makes his directorial debut with Disney’s “Maleficent” The story itself is a re-imagined version and fans of the animated movie should be aware that this is not about Sleeping Beauty.

The story begins in the way many fairy tales do, but the narrator quickly informs the audience that this old story is “anew”. Its backdrop is divided between the human kingdom and the fantastical land called The Moors. Maleficent is introduced as a young faerie with powerful wings, ethereal magic and compassion who quickly becomes the protector of the land. One day she encounters a young boy – future King Stefan – and builds a trusting friendship that later on turns into “true love’s kiss”. However, greed turns into betrayal and anger unleashing Maleficent’s dark side.

Stromberg excels at creating a magical world that is suitable to the different story line. There is enough exposition to understand Maleficent as both a hero and the well-known evil mistress that everyone fears (or loves). After all, this is her story which excels with Angelina Jolie’s portrayal throughout and the makes for the strongest aspect of the film.

“Maleficent” is without a doubt a magical escape in the box office this weekend. The film belongs to Jolie who makes an old-villain absolutely mesmerizing who will be embraced by critics and fans alike.
