Of all the genres out there, horror churns out more than any other. More often than not they are dreadful attempts and rehashing the magic of something that came before it, but every so often one comes along that really stands out for whatever reason. The latest taking on the slasher torture side of horror is Home Sweet Home. Can it take on one of the hardest parts of horror to get right and deliver something that works or will it be just another forgettable place holder on the video shelf?
Home Sweet Home follows a married couple who come home after a fun night out only to discover someone is in their home and turns their romantic evening into a torturous nightmare. This film follows a similar formula to The Collector but takes it in a slightly different direction. For the first part of this movie it delivers a really eerie build up with little to no sound and some confusion to where it’s headed. Once it finally gets going it becomes a pretty standard game of cat and mouse, but thanks to a creepy killer helps step this movie out of the norm. This is one of those slasher characters that are so simple it is just disturbing. There are moments where he just stares at his victim for an extended amount of time and it will send an uncomfortable streak up your spine. What seemed like a pretty average film ended up being a pretty cool slasher film. What makes it stand out even more is that it isn’t so much a straight up slasher flick, but also mixes in the popular torture aspect but leaves out a lot of the variables that are normally used to stretch out a film like this and instead just let it play out things as they were. While the film never gets overly gory, it still delivers just enough to keep the fans happy.
This was a nice surprise to the genre that has delivered little to nothing all that great in some time. The film started slow, but really stepped things up and delivered a slow burn horror slasher torture flick that you should enjoy. While the film stood well throughout it even manages to deliver a twist ending to deliver somewhat of a “WHAT” moment and the chance for more entries if need be. If you are looking for a decent slasher flick then look no further than Home Sweet Home when it hits stores on May 7, 2013.
