Magnolia Pictures V/H/S comes to DVD and VHS (Photos)

The found footage genre is really gotten to the point that most of the entries are just a waste of time. It seemed there was little new to add to this film style to make it worth giving the films a chance, but with V/H/S it looks as though they may have done it. Featuring an anthology style storytelling direction could this finally be the one that works on a new level or will it be one that you should record over?
Now Magnolia Pictures has released this found footage horror film to the masses in a brilliant collector’s edition on VHS. If you’ve never heard of the film V/H/S follows a group of misfits who are hired to burglarize a house to find a video tape. Once inside they find a dead body, a group of old televisions, and a pile of tapes full of strange and disturbing videos. This is probably the best use of this genre so far. The film’s grainy quality mixed with the way these stories use the camera’s make sense as opposed to feeling forced like most of these films. At first it seems as though this film is going to go downhill fast, but then takes a massive U-turn to deliver something really cool and fun. Like with a lot of anthology there is a core story that connects everything together, but here it bypasses trying to be clever and just creates a simple story of these guys trying to find the proper tape and intertwines the stories together. In addition they even went so far as to throw some other stuff in there that had nothing to do with the movie as though they had recorded over something else that added realism to it. What’s really cool here is that the stories are in all sorts of genres as opposed to just horror. There are creepy elements to them all, but range from slasher style to monster to supernatural to create one of the most unique experiences of this genre so far.
Whether you are a big fan of the found footage genre or not this is a great addition to the film style. Filled with plenty of gore, nudity, and some creative stories V/H/S is sure to please any horror fan. Even if you don’t like the whole movie you are sure to enjoy some of the stories. This is one of those films that lend it to be able to make numerous sequels and if they keep the same quality is a welcomed idea.
