A Christmas Carol at Citadel Theatre in Lake Forest

An innovative new "A Christmas Carol " awaits you at the Citadel Theatre. Adapted for the stage by playwright Margaret Lewis, this new version incorporates magical realism to deliver its message of hope and redemption. As we follow Scrooge on his infamous journey via the spirits of Christmas past, present and the ones to come, theatre-goers cannot help but think about the values they embrace in their own lives.

Matthew Hallstein's stellar performance as Scrooge is over the top as a mean, overbearing and hateful human being. One is sure there is no redemption for him. But gradually Scrooge melts and mellows and allows his humanity and generosity of spirit to come forth. Clare Cooney, Ross Frawley and Don Deuel are the ghosts who fill Scrooge and the audience with fear and dread. John Ham is his loving nephew, Fred, never gets up on his Uncle Scrooge, plays the role with tenderness and compassion.

With a cast of 20, this is ambitious work. Because of the small, intimate space of the Citadel Theatre, the audience becomes immersed in the tale, while the stairs coming in and out of the theatre are used to the space's best advantage. The turntable wall allows for many scenes, bringing its own special brand of magic to the performance.

For a unique gift of holiday cheer, discover this Christmas Carol. A Christmas Carol is playing now through December 29 at Citadel Theatre, 300 S. Waukegan in Lake Forest, Thursdays through Sundays. For tickets, go to or call 847.735.8554.
