Mafia by Dark Revenant is a popular StarCraft II custom map, a murder-mystery style mod that is an interesting change of pace from the standard income wars, DOTA, and tower defense variants.
Mafia supports a huge number of players, is highly customizable, has carryover “experience” from game to game for unlocks, and is a load of diplomatic fun.
Mafia has three “teams” – the townsfolk, the mafia, and neutrals that have their own goals in mind without affiliation.
Basically, the townsfolk need to determine who the mafia are and take them up during the day by holding trials in the town square, and the mafia work together during the cover of night to murder, silence, and frame the townsfolk.
There are a huge variety of roles available in Mafia, ranging from arsonists, jesters, survivors, doctors, investigators, spies, vigilantes, blackmailers, and many, many more.
Every role has different special abilities to help accomplish goals to earn a high score, and some non-linear roles like Jester can be incredibly fun and rewarding to play (Your goal is to actually get yourself executed by town vote, so you can “troll” the game into calling for your head by accusing innocent people every round claiming that you’re an investigator or spy).
Death is part of the game, and while it does make the game a little less interesting being killed during the first night by a stray mafia hit or serial killer, you’ll net some extra points at the game’s end if you stick around.
Mafia has all the allure of those party-night murder-mystery game boxes, and you can play through one in significantly less time. Grab your friends, serve some popcorn, and hide your identity – Mafia is a StarCraft II custom map worth playing.
