Madonna shows class and some flash in Super Bowl show

Amidst a long and tense evening watching the home town team New England Patriots battle the NY Giants in Super Bowl 46, Madonna's half time show was a welcome relief for Boston fans.

In a 12 minute performance featuring gladiators, gospel singers, a marching band , fireworks and singer Cee Lo Green, among others, the "Material Girl" gave an entertaining and eclectic performance. Madonna didn't disappoint in the opening moments of the show, entering the stadium on a chariot pulled by a team of  Roman style gladiators.

Dressed in short but unrevealing black sequined skirt, black net stockings and a gold trimmed top in a gladiator style, Madonna sang a medley of tunes that were entertaining for a family audience, though far from provocative. It was a fast paced, well executed spectacle with excellent stagecraft and a cast of young singers and dancers who shared the stage and the spotlight.

Taking no chances, Madonna lip synced her songs and limited her dance moves to a few simple shimmies with no gyrations or complicated moves. She left all of the fancy footwork to a large cast of  younger dancers on stage, some of whom impressed with clever gymnastic moves, including one young man who flipped on a tightrope, center stage as Madonna looked on.

Perhaps the hightlight of Madonna's appearance was her duet with singer Cee Lo Green and the rendition of one of her hit songs, "Like a Prayer." Now in her fifties, Madonna is still au courant in her way, though she did not push the envelope in her pleasing but restrained Super Bowl 46 performance.

There were no costume malfunctions though there was a moment when the network had to try to blur out British singer who made and obscene gesture and appeared to utter an expletive as well.
