Filled with anticipation as an avid fan of the first “Machete” movie I sat back to enjoy “Machete Kills.” Once again it stars as it must the oddly comedic bad ass Danny Trejo as the world renowned killer who fights to defeat evil frequently with his weapon of choice a machete. Of course Danny Trejo is back as is the always gorgeous Michelle Rodriguez. There were some surprising new additions to the cast including, believe it or not, Mel Gibson and the always zany Lady Gaga.
The improbable story involves the U. S. Government recruiting Machete to find and destroy an evil doer who has a rocket poised to launch against Washington, DC. Given the latest machinations out of that city one could reasonable wonder which side is the evil doer. But I digress. As one would expect from the franchise “Machete Kills” is filled with over the top escapades by the irrepressible Machete as he fights his way from Acapulco to the U.S. Border and beyond. The violence is abundant but every bit as comedic as it is bloody. Charlie Sheen is cast as the President of the United States just when you are beginning to think it couldn’t get any worse. But then the entire movie is mainly about having a good laugh and in that it mostly succeeds.
But as is typical in follow on movies “Machete Kills” just doesn’t quite measure up to the original “Machete” and this is not just because it lacks Jessica Alba. Still it is fun but clearly not suitable for younger children or adults who think like younger children. It is one hour and forty seven minutes and currently in theatres pretty much everywhere.
