Lucinda Williams is a shining example of the classic folk/country/blues style of a previous generation that still sounds great today. After a rainy show at the Crossroads in Kansas City, the alternative country star came to Liberty Hall to play for a packed venue of fans of all ages. Rocking out with an energetic band backing her up, Williams played old and new hits for a loving audience that ended the show with a standing ovation from the full balcony and thunderous stomping on the dance floor.
The show started with a brief warm-up set by the guitarist and drummer, followed by a painfully long wait for the stage crew to finish setting up for the full show. Why they would not have it all set up before the small opening jam is a mystery, but eventually the increasingly restless crowd got what they wanted, when Williams stepped onto the stage to the sound of roaring applause.
Playing a wide range of songs from aggressive country jams to slow, sad blues, Williams and her band explored every attitude from fast to slow, vicious to sweet. The show featured Williams' old and new hits and even a few covers by other great artists like Bob Dylan and Neil Young.
Touching songs like "Blessed" off the Williams' new album as well as the American classic "Rockin' in the Free World" had he audience ecstatic. Expressing herself with her funny attitude and pouring her emotions into her music, Williams gave Liberty Hall their money's worth and then some. Near the finale, the bassist, guitarist and drummer each ripped and threw down for the most epic and climactic solos of the concert followed by a full, satisfying encore. Lucinda Williams is a legend from a previous era, who continues to rock out with her sassy no-nonesense attitude and moving music.
