Best debut that came across this writer’s CD player in a long, long time? Simple answer: LOWSIDE. Founded by two former members of Lillian Axe, singer Ron Taylor and Darrin DeLatte along with Craig Cowsert and Mel Bittick, these guys put out an album any fan of rock music must have for the CD player, especially if you have a road trip to take.

Imagine you cruising along some back road in the Deep South along the Texas/Louisiana border and pulling into a tavern looking for a cold beverage. You walk into a dimly lit bar, kind of hot and everyone is escaping the heat. A few bikers, some locals, some women, a few at the pool table and then some wickedly delicious music starts coming from this band that just plugged in and started playing. Hard rock with a southern feel, that powerful but bluesy tempo hits you in the chest and you don’t leave. You can’t, because each song is as good as the last. The band has the ladies swaying to the music; the vocals have that deep soul that you only get in the south. The pool game went from tense to a bunch of guys laughing and playing air guitar with the pool cues, the bikers just bought a round of shots for everyone, and you take in the sudden perfect storm surrounding you. Good people in an awesome bar with killer tunes; that is what LOWSIDE brings.
They come straight out on track one, Here And Now, are followed by the power riffs of Fear For You that has the guys heads banging along and the women’s hips swaying. The slower acoustic driven sounds of ‘Any Day’ give way to more power within only to snap back into the acoustics. There is nothing weak on the album.
