Loving fried rice and stir-fry

Venture into Crazy Fire Mongolian Grill on Buck Jones Road in Cary, for fried rice and stir-fry, especially if you are heading over to Grand Asia Market--shopping on a hungry stomach is not the cheapest or smartest way to buy groceries.

This is a stand-alone buffet restaurant offering a sushi bar during dinner hours. The atmosphere is similar to the Asian eateries in strip malls including your typical waiter and waitress service, though it can accommodate more people.

If you are a fried rice or stir-fry fanatic, as is the case for many islanders or Asians or for those who have lived among them, Crazy Fire Mongolian Grill is the perfect place to make your food just the way you want it.

The buffet line begins with your average selection of stir-fry vegetables such as onions, mushrooms, broccoli, carrots, baby corn, green onions and bell peppers. Chopped herbs, jalapeno peppers and water chestnuts are also provided.

Then, choose from nearly 10 selections of raw and chopped protein including dark meat chicken, chicken breast and ground beef. There is raw seafood like baby shrimp, scallops and calamari. Cooked sausage and gyro meat are available too.

The protein section houses cooked noodles and raw eggs. You may grab an egg for the grill man to crack open over your food as it cooks.

The third section of the buffet contains over 10 liquids such as flavored oils and sauces. Sauces include black bean, Jamaican jerk, Hawaiian, chili, lime, teriyaki and soy sauce. You will also find the signature Crazy Fire sauce while curry sauces are occasionally available.

Finally, you top your bowls of protein and veggies with over 10 dry seasoning bottles including sesame seeds, Jamaican jerk, chopped peanuts, garlic powder, lemon powder and paprika.

Once you have assembled your bowls, you walk over to the large grill where cooks prepare your food as you watch. A small amount of water is drizzled over your food, creating steam. When your food is done, you are asked if you want plain white rice or brown rice--the brown rice is actually white rice mixed with soy sauce.

Eating at this type of an Asian eatery permits you to create healthier stir-fry or fried rice dishes. The only fat on your plate will be from the fat in your meats, sauces and any oil you use. If you leave out the cooked noodles and say no to the rice, your meal is virtually carbohydrate-free. Vegetarians can eat as much vegetables, noodles and rice as they want.

While it is generally healthier to cook and eat at home, head over to Crazy Fire Mongolian Grill if you are going to eat stir-fry or fried rice anyways.
