Always in search for unique and diverse chocolate treats, I love stumbling upon something completely by accident.
As I wandered through the Beltway Plaza Giant Food store (Greenbelt, MD), my fiancee and I collected items we needed for the week. When we were ready to head for the checkout we randomly decided to walk through the baking/spice aisle. As we walked down the aisle I felt something calling to me on a shelf just below the pie tins - marshmallows!
Sitting among a smorgasbord of flavors was one I'd never laid eyes on - German Chocolate Cake mallow bites. The mallow bites appear to be Kraft's way of providing a bite size portion between the normal size marshmallow and the tiny hot cocoa version. At $1.42 (odd price, I know!) it was necessary to indulge. Considering that the chocolate flavoring is completely artificial (check out the picture of the ingredients) the smell of chocolate permeated through the plastic and could be smelt from several feet away while the bag of marshmallows sat on the table.
Despite the artificial flavors the mallow bites were very, very tasty. The chocolate marshmallow and the abundance of toasted coconut coating the outside of it really invokes the flavor of a German Chocolate Cake despite the nuts and cherries not being present.
Another neat thing about these new mallow bites is there are recommendations on the packaging for using them to enhance other desserts. I always love getting neat recipes with food, especially when they involve chocolate.
Check out all the pictures in the slide show and head to your local market to pick up a bag of Kraft's jet-puffed German Chocolate Cake mallow bites!
